- Reduced dropped WebRTC calls by 7% (confirmed by product and QA): traced failures to public relay infrastructure, made the case for a dedicated TURN server, specified TURN credential delivery over WebSocket with backend, and rebuilt the connection flow around backend-issued credentials and ICE restart.
- Re-architected a 2,000-line WebSocket handlers monolith into 13 feature-sliced modules with a hard boundary between socket transport and state mutation, so new message types ship from established patterns; consolidated 30+ legacy components into a shared UI kit adopted by the messaging team.
- Cut chat re-renders by ~30% against a React Profiler baseline (granular selectors, splice-based updates preserving referential equality, react-window virtualisation, portal-rendered context menus, memoised rich-text editor); conversations of 3,000+ messages scroll smoothly with full history.
- Drove the offset- to cursor-based chat pagination migration with backend, dramatically reducing chat issues and enabling smooth scrolling; added client-side AES-256-GCM message encryption (Web Crypto API) before persistence.
- Wrote 146 Jest unit and 54 Cypress E2E tests, with a mock WebSocket server that makes reconnect, delivery and presence scenarios deterministic without a backend.
